Collateral Damage

Headline of the day: “Borat seen as human rights victim by U.S. government”

The Bush administration — already famed for its fictitious rationale for going to war — has listed a decision to pull down the web site of a fictitious character in its annual report on human rights.

The report cited Borat’s loss of his Kazakh webpage www.borat.kz in late 2005 alongside court cases and limits on free speech faced by the few domestic media critical of Kazakhstan’s long-serving President Nursultan Nazarbayev.

The State Department report included being deprived of the web site with the murder last year of Kazakh opposition politician Altynbek Sarsenbaiuly, his bodyguard and driver which was described as “unlawful deprivation of life.”

Meanwhile Borat has also made political ripples in Ireland. Sinn Fein candidate Paul Butler has sent Lagan Valley voters copies of a DVD entitled “Butler: Cultural Learnings of Lagan Valley for Make Benefit of Glorious Sinn Fein.” I wish Animal House had this much impact.
