Network apologizes for making town of Athol butt of jokes

Comcast SportsNet said Thursday it would pull a newspaper ad that leaders of the small central Massachusetts town called insulting and offensive. The ad featured two side-by-side signs that together read: “We can pronounce Worcester … without sounding like an Athol.”

The company made the move after the town council — who are all Athols — voted to send a letter of complaint. Selectman Wayne Miller said the pronunciation of the town’s name in order to get the joke was offensive. “It has never been used as a term of endearment,” he said, adding that he was personally insulted when he read it. A motion to change the town’s name to Uranus was tabled for later discussion.

Guess there’s not a lot of other issues bothering the good people of Athol.
